LIPSTICK TAILFINS

after “The Cadillac Tailfin” by Tom Devlin

Tailfins burst out of metal,
scarlet like silvered lipstick
tubes a woman carries,
pulls from purse to sweep lips,
paint color of beating hearts
on dried up mouths
out of soft words,
words that can charm,
bedevil, ask for a ride
in this car the color of prom gowns,
its roar, the breath of younger gods.
