The River House
after “Tide Water, 1950” by W. Lester Stevens

This is the house that stands in the way
of the river that would run through it,
but the river doesn’t mind going on by
since it thinks the house looks pretty.

And the river loves the rocks
that keep the house dry,
they let the river sing its sweet song.
And that song is long, it’s gone on for years
but really, it’s just begun.

Someday the beautiful house will be gone,
it will ride away with the river,
the river that loved the pretty little house
and the sweet songs they sang together.
